The Last Word: The Thoughts of a Beauty Blogger

Can We Talk?  The Art of Giving Back

Several weeks back, while on a weekend hiatus, I was sitting and sipping on a Starbuck's venti Caramel Macchiato enjoying breakfast club, I couldn't help but feel blessed and thankful for the life I have lived. A life like everyone else's, one filled with joys and sorrows. So,  I am so honored to announce that I was selected to volunteer my time and freelance MUA services to a worthy cause that is close to my heart.

Tomorrow afternoon I will be going to the Volunteer Orientation for the local chapter of Dress for Success. I like many others came across this wonderful organization through a referral. Mine was from the Domestic Shelter that I was housed in, and yes me too, a "college educated" woman, who like they say, "should have seen the warning signs", was involved in a abusive relationship. Once I got my opportunity to get of out it, I ran for the hills and didn't look back. That also meant leaving all my things behind and I couldn't take all my things to the shelter with me. You take what's important and get the heck out!

Dress for Success and, its male counterpart, Suited for Success are organizations committed to helping the disadvantage through their: Suiting Program, you are given a referral to received a interview outfit and once you start working, two weeks of clothing to get you through until get your first paycheck to get clothes. Women are often leaving their lives behind with nothing but the clothing on their backs. Being able to browse through their local Dress for Success Boutique was a special treat for me. I was able to thrift some classic and vintage pieces from top designers from the past, Oleg Cassini, to current designers such as Marc Jacobs. The volunteers were very helpful and seem to be more excited to play in the clothes than I was. The cream of the crop was when I received my own new set of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics for my interview. At the time, I had no idea just how expensive this makeup was, but I cherished it just the same. These items are still on my makeup table to this day! They also offer Employment Retention and Job Training Programs.

I always knew that I would find a way to give back to this worthy cause, and I jumped on the first chance I had to do just that, so to say I am excited about volunteering my time to Dress for Sucess is an understatement! I encourage everyone to find that worthy cause that's dear to their heart and volunteer their time.

I would like to close with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who says, "The life of a man consists not in seeing visions and in dreaming dreams, but in active charity and in willing service."

The Fierceness of the Foil: Milani Cosmetic's Fierce Foil Eyeshine

Milani Fierce Foil Eyeshine
Milani Fierce Foil Eyeshadow Palettes

Product Review: Milani Fierce Foil Eyeshine Eyeshadow Palettes

These palettes are named after four of Italy's most beloved cities; 01 Milan, 02 Rome, 03 Florence, and 04 Venice Rome. Milani calls this line of eye shadows "eyeshine," but these highly metallic and pigmented shadows aren’t quite an eye shadow cream, but more the consistency of a thick gloss.

This metallic trend that was a huge hit on the Spring 2015 runways are a perfect trend to transition into the Fall. Milani Fierce Foil Eyeshine palettes brings this metallic trend to you at a budget-friendly price. These shadows can be found in your local drugstore or some of your beauty supply stores where available. Milani's Eyeshine palettes are excellent dupes for Stila's Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow, but for $32 for Stila's (1) eye shadow pot, you can get (3) of the Milani's eyeshine quads for $9.99 each.

Milani Fierce Foil Eyeshine showcased in a gold compact, which truly highlights the beauty of these shadows, with a clear lid and are available in four shade selections two of which are warm color tones and the other two are cool tones. Each palette contains a rubberized applicator which can be used to apply the shadows. Milani instructs the user to tap the applicator into the color and start close to your lash line and slowly blend and build up to create a jewel tone look. Word of caution: tap the applicator lightly in the product or you will get too much product and it will look gooey and patchy due to the larger metallic flakes within the shadow. I had to find this out the hard way!  I applied it with a small synthetic detail brush instead, and found that the makeup brush worked far better for me than the product applicator that came with the palettes. This is definitely a build-able product, apply it in thin even layers.

At a glance, they appear liquid metal-like and very shimmery in the compact, but the grain of the glitter is quite large and chunky, so I don’t know if these shadows would be classified as a metallic finish. Milani created these colors to be applied true to color, which was the case with the gold and brown tones, but the blues and purples were clearly much sheerer than what you see in the pot and blended to a sheer finish. This maybe because I didn't apply a eye primer and the gold and brown tones are closer to my own skin tone. Milan (chic nudes & neutrals)  and Florence (molten gold, rose & bronze), hands down gave the best color pay off out of the (4) eye shadow quads, however, the Rome (lush lavenders & smokey purples) and Venice (frosty white & ice-cool blues) palettes were sheerer but still doable. The formulations aren't quite a cream, but feel more like a gel and greasy when applied. They seemed to have more of an eye gloss-like texture. Unfortunately, the shadows have a tendency to crease, smear, and migrate. These shadows aren't a cream to powder formulation, but do have the some of the fall out problems as powder.

Milani Fierce Foil Eyeshine Quads are great for that special occasion or night out on the town when you want a bold and beautiful metallic eye look whether it is from one of the cool or warm tone palettes. They are also great for lash users because of the creamy nature of the formulation, the product does stay put, so less fall out on your lashes. The only down fall, I can see is that the large grain size of the glitter will produce some fall out, but not as much as say a powder shadow. I also recommend a eye primer which will give it more staying power and help the cooler palettes become more opaque on the eye, this is needed especially for women of color to help the blues and purples pop on the eye.

I am sure you will love these metallic foil shadows, but for those who are "cosmetically challenged" I am available to help you pull this look together, just check the right task bar for the link to my Styleseat site to set your appointment.

Thanks
